No one likes to see their dog suffer, but there are times when your pet may get sick, and you will need to know what to do. One type of disease that dogs may get is Addison’s disease. While this disease can be treated if it is caught in time, dogs can die if they are not treated fast. This means that dog owners need to know and understand the symptoms of Addison’s disease so they can recognize them and get their dog treated as soon as possible. Addison’s disease in dogs is caused by the adrenal glands failing to produce the cortisone that is needed to keep the body functioning, as it should. There are a variety of different things that can cause the adrenal glands to fail in a dog. At times this can be a result of a genetic problem in the dog, and it often affects small dogs that are pure breeds such as the Shih Tzu. Another reason that adrenal glands can fail is because of a very stressful situation. If your dog has had a very stressful situation, no doubt the adrenal glands went into full gear, after which they may have stopped functioning properly. Taking your dog off cortisone therapy too quickly can also throw your dog into Addison’s disease. One symptom of Addison’s disease in dogs is an upset stomach. While more than likely your dog will have an upset stomach once in awhile, it is important that you get your dog checked out if they’re displaying any other signs of the disease. Weakness is another symptom of Addison’s disease, and if your dog is weak and has an upset stomach, these symptoms together better prompt you to take him to a vet. Other symptoms of Addison’s disease include pale gums, cool extremities, slow heart rate, weak pulse, and shakiness. If you think that your dog may be displaying signs of Addison’s disease, do not second guess yourself, but get your dog to a vet immediately and get your pet the help that he needs. |
