Just like humans can suffer from allergies so too can dogs. Allergy symptoms vary and may include constant scratching, diarrhoea, vomiting, swelling, redness and rashes of the skin, and weight loss. Diagnosing the cause of an allergy is not always easy and it is vital to consult your veterinarian. Below are the different types of allergies which can affect dogs: Flea Allergies: This is one of the most common allergies and is obviously caused through fleabites. It is important to use a flea treatment on your Shih Tzu on a regular basis to avoid flea infestations. An infested dog that develops an allergy may end up with an infection if left untreated. Food Allergies: Food related allergies are not common but can occur. Dogs may become allergic or intolerant to certain ingredients in their diets. Too much protein (ie wheat gluten, beef and lamb) in a dog's diet for example could lead to allergies. If your Shih Tzu is experiencing symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea consult your vet before changing your dog's diet. It is important to rule out any other illnesses which may be causing the symptoms. Inhalant Allergies: The cause of inhalant allergies is in the air that your Shih Tzu breathes. Dogs can be allergic to pollen, dust mites and dust and even mould.
Contact Allergies: Dogs can become allergic to things they touch like hazardous plants, nylon carpet, the fabric of their bedding or even their collars. |
